OLT.com offers its users a free system for submitting tax returns online. Its basic free package is open to most people, assuming you fall into certain categories (primarily regarding your age and income). Generally speaking if you’re under 65 and your income was less than $100,000 for a tax year then you are able to use olt’s free filing system. Even if you don’t fall into the realms of free service then you are able to use the Premium Edition service for the very reasonable price of $7.95. There are a few extra benefits to using the Premium Edition, as well, including priority audit assistance, live customer support (via instant messenger or phone), priority email support, extended online account access and – perhaps most importantly – unlimited access to amended returns (normally worth $49.95). State tax returns cost $7.95 irrelevant of which package you are on.

Customer support on OLT.com is better than most, with an extensive FAQ and a well organised  “Tax Corner”, which tells you all the basic information on all those taxing tax terms. The site provides information on their limitations and guarantees, as well as providing clear (albeit quite long) instructions regarding their privacy policies. The site allows you to amend tax returns from previous years, even if your previous returns were not filed with OLT, which can be very cost effective if you take out their Premium Edition plan and have a number of amendments to make.

The site is easy enough to navigate, although quite bland. There’s the occasional picture of a couple smiling lovingly into a laptop screen to spice things up a little. Who doesn’t just love doing their taxes, right?!  Otherwise the site is very text heavy and contains only white, blue and purple (the brand colours). Registering is the usual affair of basic information and choosing which tax return forms you require, although not much information is provided prior to registering unless you access the help pages.

Some of the information and links around this site are welcomed additions but the site feels almost ‘empty’ for its lack of features. There is no software information, no videos or audio guides, nothing in the way of a blog or recent news updates, no tax calculator. Although the service seems an adequate one, we would like to have more of a glimpse into the whole system prior to signing up to it. However, OLT appears to provide the basic requirements for filing taxes, and at a very competitive rate.
