TaxWorks.com offers a comprehensive tax filing system for a range of business budgets. You can choose from either the Basic, Business Basic, Silver, Gold or Platinum software packages, each allowing you to access a range of features. Understandably the Platinum package opens up the most options, but deciding which is best for you will require you to consider each feature carefully and how it might apply to your business.

At $895 for the Basic package we feel that TaxWorks’ services are primarily for small and large businesses rather than self employed individuals. Its features reflect this, allowing you to access a range of tax forms depending on the needs of various elements of your business and the needs of your employees. The tax planning software is proclaimed to be “state-of-the-art” and its list of features certainly seems to beat a lot of the competition. The software uses a five-pane tax return system, which is essentially a series of tabs which separate various elements of your tax returns so that the input is as simple as possible. The software does the various calculations for you. This handles all your fixed asset requirements and can even deal with complex disposition transactions such as group sales and like-kind exchanges. We were also impressed by the software’s inclusion of a to-do list which reminds you of tasks you are yet to complete or any appointments or important dates you have coming up. If you are a business looking to maintain records with other companies, then the software allows you to update information without the need to change any other element of previous years’ returns, a real time-saver. You can also transpose information from previous returns on to new returns, so there’s no risk of data loss. These impressive software features are the key reason why this site gained such a high mark from us for the “variety of tax services offered” despite it only really selling varieties of software.

So we were impressed by the product on offer! But whilst this is all very good there are areas for improvement regarding its online presence and online functions. TaxWorks.com primarily aims to sell its software rather than provide online support, although there are a number of video tutorials and webinars that can be accessed through the website, which improve the customer service elements. Otherwise there is no ‘help’ section to speak of and you are forced to use the software’s inbuilt help (which isn’t a great help if you’re having problems navigating the software or even receiving error messages when trying to perform certain tasks) or to call their helpline. The site is very good at telling you about their various features and positive qualities but there is a distinct lack of information otherwise, particularly regarding any data protection and security information, which we feel is vital to know prior to purchasing any product of this kind.  

In short, taxWorks.com has a somewhat bare website but its software features are very good. It’s not cheap but it’s certainly worth considering if you’re a small or large business with a variety of tax filing needs.
