The good: this tax software is free. The bad: this tax software is free. For more than 20 years, I've prepared my own tax returns for business and personal including multiple rental properties. I've also used IRS FreeFile and TurboTax so I am not a novice. I found the OLT software to be confusing and unintuitive plus I encountered numerous technical issues.

For the "free" version, the only support is via email and it takes several days to receive a reply and the responses did not provide a satisfactory solution. If you want more immediate "chat" support, you have to pay extra for that. I finally gave up and used IRS FreeFile, which took only 2 hours versus trying to work with OLT for more than a week.

In summary, I would not recommend OLT.com to a friend.

This is a very cheap, low-end software service for taxes. A year after filing I found it made some basic mistakes on a return because it fails to ask the right questions or integrate federal information properly on a state return. Namely, you need to go line-by-line by yourself to make sure the software doesn't screw up. I contacted customer service and they not only didn't care but they simply told me everything I did by hand to correct what their software did was right. Namely, you can't trust them to be accurate.

In summary, I would not recommend OLT.com to a friend.

Because I've done my own taxes for 40 years, I know something about taxes. What I don't know, I can search for at irs.gov or other sites quickly.
I do not enjoy answering 200 questions that don't apply to me. Most tax software requires this.
With OLT, I can report -
W-2s
1099s (all varieties)
Investment income and loss, long-term and short-term
Dividends
Interest
Business income
Rental/royalty income

I can report deductions-
Educator
Mortgage interest
Business expenses

OLT allows me to report ALL the required items, and does not require answers to questions that don't apply to me. The list of EVERYTHING IS THERE; I can examine it to see what applies, then I only select and fill out information for what is needed.

In addition to federal, I have 2 states to file for the lowest possible price; much less than what the other major tax softwares charge.

In the past, I've used Turbotax, Liberty tax, TAXact, CompleteTAX and Taxbrain. I still like OLT better. OLT gets me done faster with less hassle.

In summary, I would recommend OLT.com to a friend.

I like OnLine taxes. This is my second year using OLT.com. What I like is that it provides a basic, easy to navigate service at a low price with a couple of 'perks' that are incredibly handy, such as the ability to access last year's returns for reference, and the ability to live chat with an operator and get questions answered on the spot.

In terms of price, I paid $15.90 to file federal and state taxes. The state tax filing is $7.95 regardless of state. In addition I got the access to prior year returns and the live customer service.

The navigation is easy to understand and I can get the job done. There are no bells and whistles, 'infotainment', fancy apps or otherwise on this site. I don't really need that stuff at this point in my taxpaying life -- I just want to key my information in, get a question answered here and there, and get it done as quickly as possible.
